Having a swimming pool is perhaps one of the most inviting features of your property. After all, this can greatly transform your backyard into a haven of sorts, all within your reach. This also serves as a place where you can spend some much-needed quality time with friends and family.

With swimming pools being a hazard to children and pets, having a pool fence is the best way to go for everyone’s safety and protection. This can prevent unwanted accidents and injuries and give homeowners the peace of mind they need knowing they have taken a proactive approach.

Speaking of proactive, many pool owners love the idea of making their own DIY pool fence installation. This gives them such a rewarding feeling after seeing their own handiwork. If you plan on undertaking this type of project, below are some tips on how to get started with building your own pool fence.

Start by Marking Out Your Deck

The first thing you need to do when it comes to DIYing your pool fence installation is to ensure that its foundation is safe and secure at all times. You can do this by not only mapping the whole layout of the pool area and by marking the respective holes out on your deck.

It’s best to keep in mind that the fence should be placed at least 2 to 3 inches from the pool edge. Using the provided section template, mark the spots where the holes have to be made until all sections of the swimming pool area have been covered. Using fence panels or templates can make the job much easier.

Take your time marking the holes. As a matter of fact, it’s often advised you do this marking and measuring twice to make sure that it is accurate. After all, once you start drilling later on, you don’t want to make the mistake of making too many holes or making a few holes than what is necessary

Proceed by Drilling the Holes

After marking out the deck and where the respective holes are to be drilled, it’s time to get to the actual drilling part. Using our grill guide to keep it level, drill a half-inch or quarter-inch hole into the marked areas.

Continue drilling until all holes have been drilled. You may need to turn your drill guide at a slight angle, especially if your swimming pool has a curve. Clean the surrounding area of any dust and debris by sweeping it off and rinsing this with water afterward.

Insert the Ground Sleeves In

The ground sleeves help keep the pool fence in place. At the same time, this particular tool allows you to easily remove your pool fence when needed. Slide the ground sleeves into the holes and tap this into place until it is flush with the ground.

Make a Custom Cut

No two swimming pools are made exactly alike. These swimming pools differ from one backyard and location to another, with the design, shape, and whatnot varying to some extent. This makes swimming pool configurations quite challenging, particularly for those who are DIYing their pool fence installation.

Making a custom cut ensures that the panels of the pool fence are properly fitted for the target area. Thankfully, making a custom cut is easy since many pool fence systems available on the market today have taken on a modular route.

With the materials provided in ChildGuard’s pool fence installation kit, you can make accurate measurements of how much you need to cut and take off from the mesh panels.

Make sure that the screws are placed properly to keep the pole from moving and sliding out of place.

Put Up the Pool Fence

The last part simply requires putting up and latching the fence in place. This is perhaps one of the easiest parts of the DIY pool fence installation. All you need to do is prop up the pool fence panels and slide this onto the ground.

With the molding facing out onto the pool, unroll the fence and put these onto the ground sleeves and holes you made earlier. After covering the whole perimeter, the last thing you should do is attach the latch to the fence and keep the fences together.

Drill just right between the center top screws and put the latch on it. Since this works on tension, don’t forget to pull tight to connect the pulls and put the eye in the latch.

The Bottom Line

Making a successful DIY pool fence installation can be downright rewarding. With its relatively simple process and a complete kit to boot, you can make a DIY pool fence installation a breeze and feel every bit as accomplished, all while ensuring your family, friends, and pets are all safe.
