When it comes to investing in a pool, most people think about all the fun and excitement that it will bring; spending warm, summer days relaxing by the refreshing water. However, many don’t expect to have to deal with algae blooms, which can reek havoc on a pool in just one night. There are, obviously, many different types of algae that can affect your pool but the worst and most difficult of these is black algae. That’s why we are here. Thankfully, there are some solutions that you can try to help clean and further prevent black algae from forming in your pool.

Identifying Black Algae In Your Pool

For many individuals, green algae are the most common type of algae seen, and it is the easiest to treat and remove. On the other side of the spectrum, black algae have a more aggressive aspect to it. Similar to the black mold that can be found inside homes and moisture filled areas, black algae typically forms on the surface of the pool in the form of spores and black spots. It can be very difficult to get rid of black algae. Like black mold, black algae often roots itself within the tiniest of cracks which is why shocking your pool alone doesn’t always get the job done.

How Can You Treat Black Algae?

Treating the black algae bloom in your swimming pool can be a tedious and time-consuming process, but attacking it aggressively is the way to go. You need to first take chlorine tabs (while wearing gloves!) and scrub any black algae spots that you can see near the surface. If your black algae bloom is located at the bottom of your pool, you need to use the same method, but attach your chlorine tab to a pool pole or another tool that can reach the spots. Once you have finished with the chlorine tab, you will want to go back and vigorously scrub every square inch of your swimming pool’s surface, which will bring up all of the remnants of the black algae. Finish the process by adding the appropriate amount of algaecide to your swimming pool, while also turning off all filters for at least a 24 hour period. Once the 24 hour period is up, you need to balance out the pH levels in your pool, just as you would with regular maintenance. Most importantly, don’t let anyone in the family swim in the pool for at least a week while this is taking place. You should see your pool looking clean and brand new in no time.

How Can Black Algae Be Prevented?

Of course, there are many different things and tricks that you can use to help further prevent black algae, and any other type of algae, from forming in your pool in the future. The most important key to this prevention lies in how often you are maintaining and cleaning your swimming pool. It is crucial to always check to make sure that your pool’s pH levels are balanced, and that all filtration systems in use are in proper working order. If you have any other concerns or are not sure how to maintain your swimming pool effectively, it may be in your best interest to contact a professional who can perform the maintenance for you.

Algae blooms are not necessarily a problem in every single pool, but it is always good to be cautious and make every effort to maintain your pool to avoid any issues. Algae can come in all different forms, all different colors, and can have varying aggressiveness once it blooms in your pool. However, there is always a way to treat and take care of the situation at hand. By following this tips and by regularly maintaining your pool, you will not have to worry about any algae blooms attacking your swimming pool anytime soon.
