Swimming pools are perfect recreational features for residential properties. They provide an outdoor space which is perfect for entertainment. Moreover, pools promote a healthy lifestyle of exercise for the entire family. Unfortunately, swimming pools can also be a source of danger, especially to small children and even pets. Therefore, you should take precautions in order to protect your family. The most important security feature that you should install is a pool safety fence.

Pool fences refer to barriers made from glass, wood or other materials and will deter young children because they will not be able to gain access. However, it is also important to have a backup protection gadget in case the child or other person gains access to the pool. This is the role of a pool alarm. Basically, this gadget will notify you if there is unexpected intrusion in your pool. Here is a short discussion of the common types of pool alarms and their pros and cons.

Underwater Alarms

Underwater pool alarms are designed to utilize a sonar grid to detect unusual activity in the water. The concept of this technology is similar to the echolocation used in water by creatures such as whales. In simple terms, sound pulses are emitted and the reflected waves are analysed. If the underwater alarm detects an object, an alarm will be sounded. This alarm is favorable because the sensor is sensitive and can detect objectives which are fifteen pounds or heavier. On the other hand, you will have to switch off the alarm before swimming.

Infrared Detectors

Infrared detectors are normally installed on the poolside. These are manufactured as passive gadgets which detect the infrared energy emitted by bodies. The more advanced design emits infrared rays and determines the presence of objects, depending on the reflection. Infrared pool alarms are advantageous because they are sensitive enough to keep your pets safe. However, if poorly installed, the alarm will become prone to false alarms.

Floating Motion Sensors

A floating pool sensor is designed to detect disturbance in the water body. Simply speaking, the device will determine the displacement of water and waves created when an object enters the pool. The data will be used to recognize a breach. This type of pool alarm is relatively inexpensive, and it can be used in all types of pools. Unfortunately, if the weather is rough and the surface is disturbed by strong wind, an alarm will sound.

Personal Immersion Detector

The personal immersion detector is essentially a wristband which is connected to base alarm units. These gadgets will send a signal which will sound an alarm in the base units if they come into contact with the pool. They are ideal solutions for protecting your children when they are working in the yard. This detector is ideal because it will only be targeted at individuals in danger and pets. Unfortunately, if the person removes the detector, it will be useless.
