Your pool is an investment. It is also a place for fun and relaxation. To protect your investment and to keep it safe and clean, regular maintenance is essential. There are several tasks you should do each week to make sure your pool is clean and safe for swimming. Proper maintenance will also save you time and money as it keeps the pool running efficiently, reduces energy and water waste, and prevents serious and expensive damage.
Weekly Pool Maintenance for Your Swimming Pool
To get the most out of your pool and to keep it ready for swimming all year round, these are the tips to remember for proper weekly maintenance.
- Remove all leaves and debris from the pool surface using a skimmer.
- Clean out the debris and leaves that have collected in the skimmer basket and the strainer-housing basket.
- Brush the sides of the pool and the floor with a pool brush
- Vacuum the debris that was loosened from brushing.
- Check the water level which should be sitting at the midpoint of the water skimmer.
- If you have a sand filter then you will need to backwash the filter to remove the dirt.
You need to make sure your pool pump works efficiently. You can save electricity by not running your pool pump all day. However, you should make sure that it will pump your entire pool water through the filter at least once each day. This means you will need to run it generally for about 8 hours a day.
Additional maintenance is needed regarding the pool chemistry. Evaporation causes water loss and rain can interfere with chemicals in the pool. Having the right pool chemistry is important for clean and safe swimming water. Test the water and adjust for PH and total alkalinity. The pH for pool water should be around 7.4. Higher or lower than this can indicate high or low chlorine levels. Too much chlorine can cause skin and eye irritation and loo little causes surface pitting. Total alkalinity levels should be between 80-150ppm.
You can also add a few other compounds to make sure your water stays clean. Clarifier is a great way to filter the pool. Clarifier works by collecting particles and oils from lotions that collect in the water. As the water is filtered, these particles are removed much easier. For crystal clear water add 1 ounce of clarifier for every 5,000 gallons of water. You can also add algaecide to remove algae and bacteria growth from the water. It also helps maintain proper pH levels and chlorine.
